MOTHER'S
DAY HUGE SUCCESS
130 members, families and guests thoroughly enjoyed the Mother's
Day brunch.
Julie Harrett, Rachel Gage, and Kristen Freytag and her mother,
outdid themselves sprucing up the Club. Particularly impressive
were the centerpieces displaying gorgeous flower arrangements
in freshly polished trophies.
This was the first event for the new social committee and if
this is an indication of things to come, we're in for a treat.
SPRING
CLEAN UP ACCOMPLISHED
Bill Barrett and his House and Grounds Committee put forth an
outstanding effort on May 22. They installed new seawall boards
and coverings; cleaned out building #4 and the Club storage
building; removed old sail storage lockers for donation to the
Sailing School; installed new Junior area parking controls;
and cleaned out the grave yard area.
A special thank you to Scott Yager, Jim Petersen, Dan Barker,
Dave Navin, the Barretts, Terry Blanchard, Jeff Doubek, Jim
Smith, George Kummer, Brassel, Sonette Salter, Matt Ripkey,
Nichol Hansen, Jim Kilvin, Peter Ferris, Pete Barrett, Art Larson
and the Sea Scouts represented by Girl Scout Troop #316: Jamie
Brelasco, Kelsey Lovgren, Roxanne Carrington, Kysa Cunningham,
Allison and Louise Glon.
E REGATTA
ENJOYED BY ALL
With the help of a capable staff, dedicated vendors, and dedicated
volunteers, the sailors attending the E Scow Spring regatta
were treated to a Friday evening welcoming party, Saturday evening's
pig roast, and challenging racing provided by Race Committee
chair Mike Sherin, assisted by Gloria Melges and Nancy Schloemer.
Dawn Ripkey, Terry and Nancy Blanchard, Steve and Mary Jane
Schalk, Dianna Colman, and a host of others helped make the
regatta a success.
Race results appear elsewhere.
REAR
COMMODORE'S CORNER
Prior to the Spring Clean Up Day, the Clubhouse was cleaned
from top to bottom by the staff and K & S Cleaning. Regular
daily and weekly cleaning schedules have been established.
High winds and waves dislodged approximately 45% of the pier
boards on Thursday morning, May 20. Luckily all components were
retrieved. In the following days the water level went up 6 inches,
leaving us at risk to incur further pier damage. Consideration
is being given to screwing down the decking.
The new tractor has been put to daily use as boats have been
moving out of storage and into the parking lot. Parking assignments
have been posted.
See you on the water!
SPRING
REGATTA RESULTS
23 Lasers competed on May 8 in the annual Lake Geneva Mothers'
Day Regatta. Three of the five scheduled races were completed
in varied conditions. For race #1 a southeast wind came in at
10-15 mph. For race #2 the wind shifted more to the south and
peaked at 30 mph before dropping to "zip" as the tail
enders came to the finish line. Then a third race was held in
drifting conditions. Former North American Laser Class Secretary,
Mark Kastel, from LaCrosse, sailed a consistent 1, 2, 3 series
to win the day. Tim Krech from Pewaukee placed second, and Steve
Long from Chicago, who won the windy second race by a comfortable
margin, took third overall. Local fleet members placed: 9th,
Wendell Sherry; 11th, Kit Stricker; 12th, Gordy Lamphere; 13th,
Ken Wruk; 16th, Dan Wright; Top Radial, Coye Harrett.
The E Scow Annual Spring Regatta was sailed May 15-16 in 0 to
12 mph shifty winds. 46 boats competed, representing 15 clubs
from as far away as Colorado and New Jersey. Current national
champion, Sheldon Ecklund, led the Geneva contingent to win
the regatta with an 8-1-2 record. Minnetonka's Rob Evans placed
2nd. Our own Brian Porter won the first race and placed 3rd
overall. Also representing Geneva were Pete Wall, 6th; Jim Smith,
8th; Scott Ripkey, 12th; Ken Wruk, 18th; Steve Schalk, 25th;
Ron Schloemer, 28th; Bill Freytag, 33rd; Frank Davenport, 35th;
John Simms, 39th; Mike Gannon, 41st. Five boats sailed with
experimental asymmetrical spinnakers. Art Brereton's T0-101
was the top boat in that group, sailing to what would have been
overall 2nd had the asymetrical's been scored
Lake Eustice, FL, was host to 54 boats in the MC Midwinters
in March. Andy Burdick won the regatta without winning a race.
Kelly Reese placed 2nd; Eric Hood, 7th (he won a race); Bill
Freytag 31st; Tom Schmidt, 33rd.
At the Easter Regatta in Charleston, Charles Colman captured
3rd place in the E Scows with Ken Wruk and Steve Schalk placing
9th and 10th. Eric Hood finished 5th in the MCs.
Erick Youngquist took a 5th in C Scows at the Black Tie at Rush
Creek, TX. Kelly Reese placed 7th in MCs; Tom Schmidt was 20th
and 3rd grand master.
Island Bay YC, Springfield, IL, held a C Scow Spring Regatta
on April 24-25. Our fleet was represented by Charlie Harrett,
5th, and Jim Smith, 10th..
Bill Freytag finished 2nd at the MC Dixie Regatta at Shreveport
YC on April 24-25. Tom Schmidt finished 7th.
Pewaukee was the scene of the MC North Americans the first weekend
of May. Eric Hood was the only Geneva entry, placing 10th in
the five race event.
The Melges 24 National Championship was sailed at Santa Cruz,
CA, in early May. Sheldon Ecklund won the final race and placed
2nd overall, behind European champions Luca Santella/Giovanni
Maspero.
Cedar Lake Indiana held the annual C Scow Ice Breaker Regatta
May 1-2. Andy Burdick won the opening race but a 10th in the
second race dropped him to 3rd overall.
Vincent Porter continued to be successful on the Harvard University
team during April and May and will be competing at the Collegiate
Nationals at The Gorge, Oregon, in early June.
Clifford Porter had a race win in the Class X White Cap Regatta
held at Pewaukee. We don't have the overall results.

A REMINDER
If you have a perpetual trophy that needs engraving, the trophy
should be returned to LGYC prior to July 4th so that it can
